Stepping Stones Phonics

What is it and how does it work?

The Program & Resources

Stepping Stones is a collection of resources designed to support parents and teachers who are teaching children to read and write. Collectively, these resources form a comprehensive, adaptable Systematic Synthetic Phonics program, aligned to the Australian Curriculum, and to the Science of Reading.

Created by an experienced teacher, mother, and homeschool educator, the Stepping Stones resources are an affordable alternative to many of the SSP programs on the market.

Stepping Stones can be used as a full, ready-to-implement SSP Program (Check out our FREE Lesson Suggestions) or parents and teachers can pick and choose which resources are relevant to their little learners.

All Stepping Stones resources are available to be purchased either as PDF downloads, or as professionally printed (gloss card) physical resources. We also have a number of FREE resources for parents and teachers to download and use.

The Steps

There are 24 steps in the Stepping Stones program and resources. Each step introduces new grapheme-phoneme-correspondences (letters and sounds) and/or morphology concepts. The steps are sequential, so young children new to reading, or starting their first year of schooling, begin at Step 1. If your child/student has some reading skills already, use the Stepping Stones Quick Placement Quizzes to find their starting point. While all children learn in different ways and at different rates, as a guide (and in alignment with the Australian Curriculum) the steps align to school year levels as follows:

Prep/Reception - Steps 1 to 6

Year 1 - Steps 7 to 12

Year 2 - Steps 13 to 18

Year 3 - Steps 19 to 24

Their attention to detail and commitment to quality truly stood out. We’ve already recommended them to others.
